Throwback uniforms are a staple today in sports. Fans relish in the nostalgic feeling of reliving glory days with their team’s old uniforms, or maybe even just dig the style from a few decades ago. This year, teams such as the Blue Jays and Orioles have even brought back their old style uniforms as their everyday game gear. Throwback uni’s are stylish but Yankees fans have been immune to the entire fad. The pinstripes are a timeless uniform. How can there be a throwback uniform if the uniform hasn’t changed? Well the Yankees will show us on Friday, and they have to go pretty far back to do so. 100 years to be exact.
During Friday’s game against the Sawx, the Yankees will join in the 100 anniversary celebration of Fenway Pahk by wearing their uniform from 1912. The date goes far so back that the team wasn’t even known as the Yankees then, but instead the New York Highlanders (thank the baseball gods that changed). Taking a vintage uniform and making it modern is a dangerous move in the world of throwbacks. The NFL is the absolute worst with this (looking at you, Pittsburgh Steelers). Translating vintage uniforms into today’s cutting edge gear and equipment is risky. The 1912 New York Highlanders weren’t wearing dri-fit gear with wristbands and Jordan cleats. The players can end up looking like they were spit out of a faulty time machine.
In this case though, the Yankees, or whoever designed these uniforms got it right. The look stays along the lines of the traditional Yankees uniform. The hats are different and everyone’s going to be talking about the blue and red high socks, but overall it’s a cool move for this one occasion.
Now, the fact that the occasion is on Boston’s watch (celebrating their 100th anniversary, at their park) is another story. Let’s hope the Yanks go undefeated in these threads.
What do you think of the Yankees throwback uniforms for Friday?
