Yankees Interested in Matsui

via Jon Heyman of CBS Sports | There has been “some contact” between the Yankees and free agent Hideki Matsui.

The Yankees reportedly only have $1-2 million in their budget for a DH, so Matsui might be a cheaper option than either Carlos Pena or Johnny Damon. The 37-year-old batted .251/.321/.375 with 12 homers and 72 RBI with the A’s last season and previously played with New York from 2003-2009. The Yankees will likely shuffle many of their veteran players out of the DH spot throughout the season, but Matsui could be paired with the the righty-hitting Andruw Jones.

would love to see Matsui or Damon back on the team

The right move for the Yankees would be to let Vasquez be the part time DH because if he can hit for the big club like he did in the miners he would be a low cost (in keeping with budget) two position player (3d & 1st base) and if he plays well he can be used as a trad chip.I love Matsui, not a good fit.The best choice would be Pena.A DH should be an veteran player and a Power bat.

Matsui would be good as a solid, reliable stop gap measure at DH for this season as the Yankees search for a younger, healthier 3B for next year and beyond. A-Rod begins to DH in 2013.
