Hughes Makes His Yankees Return

Phil Hughes makes his return after a long battle with a dead arm.  His minor league rehab was most definetly encouraging as he was consistently living in the low to mid 90′s with the fastball.  Velocity and command will be the focus tonight as Hughes has a giant microscope on him with all of NYY Universe watching anxiously!

From Hughes via Lohud Blog:

“I know it’ll be good,” Hughes said. “I know my stuff is there, I just have to execute pitches. I know if I do that, I’ll be fine. I’m not going out there with any wonder or curiosity or doubt. I’m just going out trying to execute every pitch I can.”

Hughes’ velocity returned during his three-start rehab assignment through Staten Island and Trenton. His command was good enough last week that the Yankees decided another rehab outing was pointless.

Derek looks to put a nice little dent in his 4 hit gap that stands between him and 3000 hits.

Tonight’s Lineup:

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Russell Martin C
Brett Gardner LF

I'm anxious to see if Phil has improved his mechanics in the last couple of months in order to reduce wear and tear on his arm. I hope to see him pitch soon and do a little compare and contrast/before and after report. He'll certainly be a big help to the Yankees' rotation in the second half.
